Provides free, confidential, one-on-one basic instruction in reading, writing, and spelling to adults who can converse in English. Instruction is provided by trained volunteers. Adult learner/tutor pairs meet twice a week, for an hour and a half each time at libraries or other public locations throughout Contra Costa County. Trains volunteer tutors three times per year. Offers Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) which provides assistance to help people afford housing that is privately owned. The Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program is currently closed to new entries. Clients pay a portion of their income in rent to their landlords and the City of Pittsburg Housing Authority through funding from the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) pays the difference.
